Part 2 Check Your Environment: Clearing Mental Space for Peace and Purpose

Part 2 Check Your Environment: Clearing Mental Space for Peace and Purpose

By Mary Wells

Opening Reflection

Welcome back to the Check Your Environment series.

In Part 1, we talked about transition and how I began preparing for change by creating structure, systems, and order in my external environment.

In this part, I want to focus on something deeper—the internal environment.

Because while physical spaces matter, so do the spaces within us.

After beginning to organize my surroundings, I also began to notice something important: if I did not address what was happening mentally and spiritually, I would still carry unnecessary weight into my next season.

So I began paying attention to my thoughts, my internal habits, and what was taking up mental space that no longer aligned with peace.

And I made a decision to release it.

What I Learned in This Season

Not everything you carry is physical—some of it lives in your mind and spirit.

I learned that mental clutter can be just as heavy as physical clutter.

Old thoughts.
Repetitive worries.
Unnecessary internal noise.

All of these can take up space that peace is meant to occupy.

So I began replacing mental weight with intentional spiritual focus.

Peace is not only found in your environment—it is sustained in your mind.

I also learned that this is not just a one-time practice—it becomes training.

At first, it requires intention. You are aware of what you are doing, what you are releasing, and what you are replacing it with.

But over time, it becomes natural.

What once required effort begins to become your response.

It becomes your go-to—not something forced, but something formed within you.

This is how peace becomes sustained, not just experienced.

Let’s Look at the Scriptures Together

“Instead, I harden my body with blows and bring it under complete control, to keep myself from being disqualified after having called others to the contest.”
— 1 Corinthians 9:27 (GNB)

“Do not stop thinking about the things of heaven, where Christ is… keep your minds fixed on things above.”
— Colossians 3:2 (GNB)

How I Applied This in My Own Life (and how you can too)

In this season, I began to:

  1. Write scriptures on Post-it notes and place them where I could see them daily. I would rewrite them in my own words in fewer sentences so I could internalize, memorize, and meditate on them.
  2. Pause during the day, close my eyes, take a deep breath, and intentionally focus on who God says I am now—not who I used to be.
  3. Speak and receive God’s Word inwardly, allowing it to settle in my spirit so that it becomes stronger than anything trying to pull me backward.

Because God’s Word is not only something we read—it is something we receive.

And when we receive it, it stays with us.

Reader Takeaway

What you consistently train your mind to receive becomes the foundation of your peace.
